“With respect to athletes, to my knowledge no scientific study has ever shown that consumption of protein beyond the RDA-advised minimum (10% of daily calories) stimulates additional muscle growth or expedites physiological repair induced by exercise stress. And yet most people- the overwhelming majority of whom are predominately sedentary- generally consume upwards of three times the amount of daily protein required to thrive.”

The other night I was out to dinner with a couple of my favorite people, and my friend asked me, “What’s your take on protein powders?”

Now, let me just preface this by saying, this friend is a man, and I know many men who use protein powders, especially after workouts because of the perpetuated myth that concentrated amounts of protein help to rebuild muscles after exercise.

I say this is a myth, because it is.

I’m not a nutritionist, but I am, to a fault, totally obsessed with learning about nutrition (which may propel me to finally just go back to school one of these days to make this a reality).

I told my friend that I don’t believe he needs to use protein powder after a workout, or ever.  I told him to swap out his protein shake for an all natural green smoothie or fresh juice.  A green smoothie would fill him up and give him tons of energy to proceed with his day.

My general thought process in regards to food goes like this: If it’s organic, and fresh vegetables and fruit- it is GOOD.  If it is prepackaged- it is BAD.

Now, this isn’t always necessarily the case, not all packaged items are bad, however most of the time they are.  The closer you can get to pure ingredients, the better you are doing for your body.  So naturally, when someone takes powdered supplements of protein, I regard it as being bad.

But, I thought I needed something more to substantiate this belief, and so I found this article:

Slaying the Protein Myth by Rich Roll

Rich Roll is an endurance runner, former competitive swimmer, wellness advocate, published best selling author, and overall a complete bad@#$. Check out his site here, and make sure you read the article here, it may convince you to change your diet- like now.

Rich also has an incredible story of his fitness journey.  He was living a sedentary lifestyle and discovered how out of shape and unhealthy he was and changed his life! See before & after photos below:

Rich explains in greater detail in this article how we need to find plant based alternatives to protein, and we need to kill the myth that more protein is the key to health.  In reality, the over consumption of protein leads to a variety of diseases and evidence shows the excess protein is stored in fat cells.

Ie: the opposite of what we all want.

LMK what you think!! Would love to chat on this topic!

In my house, taco night happens at least once a week, sometimes more.  We grill spicy chicken, make guacamole, dice up fresh veggies, and basically just get down.  It’s kind of amazing.  The guac we make is pretty legendary, but even we have to change it up from time to time.  So, during our last taco night, I opted for a tostada salad and made an avo dip/spread/salad dressing.  I love making my own dressings because you know exactly what the ingredients are, and they’re fresh (x a million), with NO preservatives or additives.

And welp, in case you were wondering- this turned out freaking incredible.

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset1/2 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt (I used Fage)

1/2 Avocado

2 Green Onions

1 Garlic Clove

2 Tbsp Lime Juice

1 Tsp Agave

1 Tsp Sea Salt

1 Hanful Organic Cilantro

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 presetToss all into a blender, blend until smooth. Serve as a dip, toss in a salad, or use as a spread!

Couldn’t be easier, I mean, really, and the taste….

Think creamy, savory, delicious.

What’s your favorite homemade dressing?

It’s official my lovely friends, we are ONE week away from Halloween!!

As per usual, I still haven’t decided on a costume, let alone purchased anything towards a costume for the big evening.  I don’t know if it’s the inner procrastinator in me trying to get the last word, once again, or if this is just my semi-creative way of surprising myself?! In any case, I never end up buying a whole costume at a costume store (which is probably why my costumes usually aren’t that great.. Last year I was a girl from the 80’s- just call me Miss Original..) I always end up piecing something together last minute and consequently explaining the entire night to friends and strangers what I am supposed to be, only to abandon the entire charade after a couple of hours and instead chomping on my long awaited couple pieces of chocolate.. That’s whyyy we all dress up anyway, right? ;)

Let me know what you’re dressing up as this Halloween and maybe I can get some much need inspiration! :) ;)

It’s Wednesday here on Everything’s A Thing, and if this is your first time visiting our little corner of the blog-o-sphere, you picked a great day to say hey! Today is another install of Let’s Talk, a reoccurring fitness post that we do several times a month to just chat it up on any and all fitness related topics!  Let’s Talk is all about personal fitness stories, workout regimens, fitness inspiration, healthy foods, and much, much more.  Keep checking back for more Let’s Talk on Everything’s A Thing and make sure to send your stories, and/or topics you’d like to hear more about here.

Today’s Let’s Talk is all about a little thing we like to call Relaxation.  Relaxation, with a capital R for mucho emphasis is so, so important.  Our lives are busier than ever, and with more and more stimulation coming at us at all times, it seems like a harder task every day to find time to just chill.  It’s our cell phones, our social media, our jobs, our social life, our tendency to never unplug that leaves us often times feeling worn out..  The key to staying on top of your energy game is finding that balance and taking time to relax.

Relaxation doesn’t always mean lying on the couch and indulging in trash TV (although that rocks sometimes too), relaxing to me is getting up and out.  I love to take the doggie for a walk, go on a long hike, bike around town, or even just take a stroll to the park to relax.  You don’t need hours to make this happen, when you feel like you’re getting overwhelmed or just need a break, just get out.

Seriously, it rocks.

Other awesome ways to relax:

-Shopping (hehe)

-Listen to music

-Dancing around your house

-Watch a favorite movie

-Turn that celly off (like for reals off, not silent)

How do YOU relax? :)

In case you missed it….

Hi hi hi! :)

Just got back from a phenom trip to Las Vegas and Lake Mead and feeling just a little bit ready for some sleep and a good workout!  Hope you all are having a beautiful week and on to our toppp five!

1. Phillip Lim Pashli Bag

As we transition into deeper, warmer colors for fall, on my list of ultimate faves are deep, rich reds.  Phillip Lim‘s Pashli bag is everything and more for this fall/winter season. Pebbled cowhide, golden accents and soooo many zippered compartments for every little thing us ladies need to carry… Got to have.

2. Sauteed Kale with Apple, Onion, and Bacon

Most people hear the word bacon and their ears perk up awaiting more details. It’s true, bacon is delish in small, healthy doses. The perfect beacon for bacon is a yummy balanced salad, much like this one from Culinary Colleen.  This salad is the perfect way to segway into the new season. Saute for a warm, savory dish on a weeknight.  Add sweet, seasonal apples, onions and delicious bacon for the perfect mix.

Recipe found here.

3. Floor Grill

This may seem like an odd choice for the top five, so let me explain.. You know home design thrills me to no end, but this time it’s not all about fluffy pillows and hot pink accents (well, maybe a little), this time it’s about the details. Check out this before and after on a floor grill.. Such a simple change can have the biggest, sleekest effect!

4. Miley’s Wrecking Ball

No last name required, Miley dropped her brand new music video for her  song “Wrecking Ball” last week and poof! The buzz following her over the top VMA’s performance is hushed by clicks everywhere, everyone simultaneously trying to catch a glimpse of what Miley is dishing out now.  This time it’s not awkward grinding on a man sixteen years her senior, it’s just plain old gratuitous nudity for the world to see. To tell you the truth, I’m on the fence with this girl. Part of me is annoyed by her antics, part of me feels bad for her.. But then part of me really likes the new Miley. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not into the shock after shock tactic, but I do think her songs are really good. “We Can’t Stop,” is catchy and upbeat, and “Wrecking Ball” is a slam dunk in my mind. I love the song, I love the message, it seems surprisingly real and I have to admit, Terry Richardson rocked the video. I could do without seeing this young chica in her birthday suit, but hey, who am I to judge?

On top of all of that, it’s functional and light to the eyes.  Loveeee!
